Model Scholarship Program

Model Scholarship Program
All Virginia Tech chapters should aim to adopt the following focuses into their Scholarship programs.

New Member Scholastic Programming

1. Emphasize scholarship to New Members by having the Scholarship Chair speak with them.
2. Each New Member should be assigned to an Academic Big Sister or Helper.
a. The Academic Big Sister will serve as a support for the New Member in her particular field of scholarship.
b. Ideally the Academic Big Sister should be a member who excels in the area of scholarship and has a similar major or minor as the New Member.
c. The Academic Big Sister should advise the New Member on course selection, help her with her classes, tutor her, and ensure that the New Member puts a priority on academics and that the New Member is achieving success.

Chapter Scholastic Programming

1. Each chapter should provide or inform their members of speakers in the following topics:
a. Study skills
b. Note-taking
c. Time management
d. Test-taking strategies
e. Setting goals
f. Possible career paths
2. Each chapter should maintain a file of previous tests and notes. These files should be updated on a regular basis and be kept organized in a study room.
3. Create a Scholarship Bulletin Board in your sorority house. Include the following:
a. Important dates such as the beginning of exams, the last day to withdraw from a class, and days off from classes
b. Congratulations to chapter members who achieved success academically or professionally
c. Motivational and inspirational quotes
d. Information on library and emporium hours
e. Scholarship applications
f. Study tips
g. "I can help!" and an "I need help!" list
4. Each chapter house should maintain quiet hours during exam week.

Member-Specific Scholastic Programming

1. Members should act as positive role models for other members
2. Each member should meet a minimum GPA requirement and should be provided with resources and conditions should they fall below the minimum GPA requirement. Resources or conditions may include:
a. Study groups
b. Mandatory class attendance
c. Removal from office if a chapter office
3. Each chapter should motivate their members to do well academically.
a. Reward members with gift certificates, discounts on dues, or their name inscribed on a plaque.
b. Reward women for having the highest GPA, achieving the largest GPA improvement, and being on Dean's List
